What is Mpesa?

M-Pesa is a mobile money transfer and financial services platform that was launched in Kenya in 2007 by Safaricom, the country's largest mobile network operator. It allows users to deposit, withdraw, transfer money, pay for goods and services, and even access credit and savings—all through their mobile phones.

Setting Up An Mpesa Account

1. Get a Safaricom SIM Card

M-Pesa is a service provided by Safaricom, so you need a Safaricom SIM card. You can buy one from any Safaricom shop, authorized dealer, or agent.

  • Requirements:

  • Valid identification: National ID, Passport, Military ID, or Alien ID.

  • Some shops might require a passport-sized photo (though this is rare now).

2. Register for M-Pesa

Once you have your Safaricom line:

  • Visit any M-Pesa agent (they are everywhere in Kenya).

  • Provide your ID and your Safaricom number.

  • The agent will:

  • Register you in the M-Pesa system.

  • You’ll receive an SMS confirmation of your registration.

3. Activate Your M-Pesa Account

After registration:

  1. Go to the SIM Toolkit on your phone.

  2. Select M-Pesa > Activate or Wezesha.

  3. Enter the default PIN provided via SMS.

  4. Set your own PIN (make sure it’s secure but memorable).

  5. Confirm the PIN and your account will be active.
